Tiarra Taylor, an 18-year-old freshman and first generation college student studying Human Development and Family Studies, won the title of Miss Indiana State University (ISU) on Oct. 23, 2016.

Taylor was among 12 women vying for the opportunity to represent the university and win more than $1,500 in scholarships from the ISU Foundation and bookstore and earn the right to compete at the Miss Indiana in Zionsville, Ind. in June 2017.

“I am the oldest of four children, which motivates me to make something great of myself. Before winning the title of Miss Indiana State University, I had competed at three other locals but didn’t win. However, I refused to give up and is why I hope to inspire young women, like me, to break barriers and family cycles,” said Taylor

Taylor also won the preliminary talent award with her vocal performance of Etta James’ “At Last,” earning her an additional $100 in scholarship.

In its 35th year, the program has granted more than $30,000 in scholarship support.

“Each year the Miss America Organization (MAO) grants more than $45 million in scholarships, making it the largest scholarship provider to women in the country. The Miss ISU program is honored to be a local preliminary to the MAO and support its mission of assisting women achieve their academic goals,” said Freda Luers, executive director of the Miss ISU program.
